pH determines the chemical form of every nutrient ion in your solution — and whether those ions are soluble and available for root uptake, or locked into insoluble compounds that roots cannot absorb regardless of how much nutrient you have added. Most essential nutrients are only fully available between pH 5.5 and 6.5; outside this window, specific nutrient deficiencies appear even in a correctly formulated solution. Electrical conductivity (EC) is the measure of total dissolved solids in your nutrient solution — it tells you the overall concentration of nutrients the plant is being offered. Too low and the plant is under-fed; too high and the osmotic pressure of the solution prevents water uptake, causing nutrient toxicity symptoms that look identical to deficiency.
