Clean floors. Controlled roots. Better yields.

Clean floors. Controlled roots. Better yields.

An unprotected greenhouse floor is a continuous source of problems — weeds competing for nutrients, soil splashing onto foliage during irrigation, pest and pathogen pressure rising from exposed ground, and moisture evaporating where it should be reaching roots. Ground cover fabric solves all of this with a single installation.

Agrifirst supplies high-quality woven ground cover and weed mat solutions for greenhouse floors, open-field bed covering, and nursery walkways across North India. Our ground cover fabrics are UV-stabilised for multi-season durability, permeable to water and fertiliser solution while fully blocking light to prevent weed germination, and strong enough to withstand foot traffic, trolleys, and regular irrigation without tearing or degrading.

For greenhouse installations, ground cover maintains clean, dry walking surfaces, reduces humidity at floor level, and significantly lowers the risk of soil-borne disease spread between beds. For open-field and orchard use, weed mats suppress weed growth across row middles and under permanent crops without the need for herbicides. For nurseries, perforated and solid variants keep propagation areas clean and manageable through the entire growing season.

Agrifirst's team will recommend the correct width, weight, and perforation specification for your structure, crop system, and floor area.

A weed mat, also called ground cover fabric, is a woven polypropylene sheet installed over the soil surface to create a permanent physical barrier against weed growth. It works by completely blocking sunlight from reaching the soil surface, preventing weed seeds from germinating — the only mechanism weeds need to establish. Unlike mulch films which are impermeable, weed mat fabric has a woven structure that allows water, fertilizer, and air to pass through freely to the root zone below, making it suitable for permanent installations under crops, trees, and in greenhouses where irrigation must continue functioning through the mat.

GSM stands for grams per square meter — the standard measure of woven fabric weight and density. Higher GSM means heavier, denser, more durable fabric with better resistance to foot traffic, UV degradation, tearing, and mechanical stress. The 90 GSM weed mat is suited to nursery beds, seedling propagation areas, and locations with minimal foot traffic. The 100 GSM mat is the most widely used commercial grade for greenhouse and shade net house pathways, moderate open-field ground cover, and standard farm operations. The 130 GSM mat is the heavy-duty choice for permanent installation in busy commercial greenhouses, packhouses, high-traffic walkways, and multi-year outdoor applications where the mat must perform reliably for 5–7 years without replacement.

Weed mat and mulch film both suppress weeds through light blockage, but they serve different purposes and applications. Mulch film is an impermeable polyethylene sheet used directly on crop beds for a single season — it retains soil moisture and warmth around the root zone but must be removed and replaced each growing cycle. Weed mat is a permeable woven fabric designed for long-term installation in pathways, orchard floors, greenhouse interiors, and permanent ground cover situations where water must continue to drain through freely. Weed mat is the correct choice for any area that needs multi-year weed control without the annual cost and labour of replacement — mulch film is the better choice for active crop beds where temperature and moisture management are primary goals.

Inside protected structures, bare soil floors create multiple problems beyond just weed competition. Soil-splash from irrigation wets the lower crop canopy and spreads fungal pathogens like Botrytis, Pythium, and Fusarium — diseases that thrive in the warm, humid greenhouse environment. Bare floors also become muddy during irrigation cycles, creating unsafe working conditions and allowing soil to be tracked onto growing systems and equipment. Weed mat resolves all of these issues simultaneously — it eliminates weed growth, prevents soil-splash, creates clean and firm walking surfaces, and helps maintain the sanitary growing environment that high-value greenhouse crops require to perform at their full potential.

Weedmat Nails are purpose-made U-shaped metal or heavy-gauge wire anchor pins that are driven through the weed mat and into the soil at regular intervals — typically every 0.5–1 meter along edges and seams — to hold the mat firmly in place. Without proper anchoring, weed mat edges lift in wind, creating trip hazards for workers, allowing light penetration along edges where weeds establish and push under the mat, and causing accelerated wear from flapping against irrigation pipes and structural elements. A properly nailed weed mat installation stays flat, secure, and fully functional for the entire service life of the fabric — making Weedmat Nails a small but critical component of every installation.

Yes — weed mat is one of the most cost-effective inputs for orchard floor management. Installed in the tree row between trunk and drip line, weed mat eliminates competition from grass and broadleaf weeds for the water and nutrients delivered by the drip irrigation system, directly into the tree's root zone. Over a 5–7 year installation life, the labour and herbicide savings typically represent 3–5x the cost of the mat itself. The 130 GSM heavy-duty mat is recommended for orchard use as it must withstand multi-year outdoor UV exposure, foot traffic during harvest, and contact with fallen fruit and irrigation fittings without tearing or degrading.

Quality weed mat has a service life of 5–7 years for outdoor applications and 7–10 years when installed inside greenhouses or shade net houses where UV exposure is significantly reduced by the covering film or net. The primary factor limiting service life is UV degradation — in fully exposed outdoor environments, a mat without adequate UV stabilization will begin to break down within 2–3 years. Heavy foot traffic from machinery, repeated cutting during planting operations, and poor installation — particularly unsecured edges that flap and abrade — also accelerate wear. Agrifirst's weed mats include UV stabilization appropriate for their rated GSM and intended application, ensuring they deliver their full expected service life under North Indian field conditions.

Yes — this is one of the key advantages of woven weed mat over impermeable mulch film for permanent installations. The woven polypropylene structure is permeable to water, allowing drip irrigation, rainfall, and liquid fertilizer applications to pass through the mat and into the soil below without pooling or runoff. Drip laterals can be laid on top of or beneath the weed mat depending on the installation design. When drip lines are installed beneath the mat, they are also protected from UV degradation and physical damage from foot traffic — extending drip line service life while maintaining full irrigation efficiency.

Weed mat is supplied in standard roll widths — commonly 1.0m, 1.2m, 1.5m, 2.0m, and 4.0m — and in roll lengths suited to your area. For greenhouses, calculate the total floor area minus the footprint of raised beds or soilless growing systems. For pathways, measure total pathway width multiplied by total pathway length. For orchards, calculate the tree row length multiplied by the desired coverage width per row (typically 1.0–1.5m centred on the tree). Agrifirst advises on roll width selection to minimise seams — fewer seams mean less edge exposure where weeds can establish and less anchoring hardware required. Our team will calculate your exact requirement and recommend the correct GSM and roll configuration for your specific layout.

Agrifirst supplies commercial-grade UV-stabilized weed mats in all three GSM ratings alongside Weedmat Nails, ensuring you have everything needed for a complete, properly anchored installation. Unlike generic agricultural suppliers who stock a single undifferentiated product, Agrifirst matches the correct GSM rating to your specific application — so you are not overpaying for heavy-duty fabric in a light-use nursery, or under-specifying for a permanent commercial greenhouse floor that will see daily foot traffic for the next seven years. Our team provides coverage calculations, roll width recommendations, and installation guidance as standard with every order — making Agrifirst the most technically reliable source for ground cover and weed management solutions across North India.
